Scrat the Squirrel

SCRAT!!!  I'm a huge Scrat fan (though I'm not sure why) so I crocheted this nutty buddy.  I crocheted him because the new movie Ice Age 4 is coming out.  But if you make him, make sure you crochet his nut, too. ; )

Note: If you do not have an acorn for Scrat to hold onto, you may want to make his arms shorter.

Assembly:
Here we go- Cut a 2 circles from the brown or green felt, then cut 2 smaller circles from the black felt.  Sew the circles together using thread and needle, and then sew the circles onto the Eyes.  Sew Ear Filling in Ears.  Sew Teeth below 18mm nose, Eyes on top of head, Ears behind Eyes, Tufts to side of Eyes, Arms behind Tufts, Hips on sides of Body, Legs on bottom of Hips, and Tail on bottom of Body.  Embroidery stripes on Back and Tail with dark grey yarn.  Embroidery mouth with black thread or yarn.  Tie black yarn on tips of fingers and toes.  If you wish, you may sew his hands onto Scrat's Acorn.

Scrat belongs to his original creators and the acorn belongs to Scrat. (But the pattern belongs to me)

  5. someone on ravelry found your Scrat for me, and i love him! i'm making him for me, but i know my daughter is going to some how acquire him somehow. heh.

but, i have a question about making the body. in row 14, you say: sc in first 7st, (ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 3ch, sk 1) sc in next 3st, sk 1, sc in next 3st, sk 1, sc in next 3st, crochet from (to), sc in last 2st-15

my question is - do i do it as "(ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 3ch, sk 1) sc in next 3st, sk 1, sc in next 3st, sk 1, sc in next 3st, (ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 3ch, sk 1)"?

if so, that gives me the 15 stitches, and i don't have any more stitches to sc in after that.

this would result in the "(ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 3ch, sk 1)" tabs opposite form each other, correct?

    thank you!

    1. Well, I've already sent you this reply, but it I'm not sure if you got it. So from now on I will reply on my blog instead of by Gmail.

Alright, let's see. Basically what I did with the (ch 5...) was I was trying to make Scrat's fluff on his cheeks. But after I was done his body, I didn't like how it looked. So I made other ones separate from his body and put it over the first ones I made. So basically, I just used the (ch 5...) as stuffing for the other cheeks. So you actually don't really need to do the (ch 5..) at all.

So- yes, you do do (ch 5..) again when I said do ( to ). Oh, I see what you're saying. If you follow my instructions, you would need 22st, but you only have 18. So that means I have 4 st over what I need. I think what I did, is I put (sc in next 3st, sk 1) twice by accident. So if I'm not mistaken, if I delete that, I should have the correct number of sts.

Thank you for pointing that out! Please let me know if that fixed your problem.

I'm having trouble with the nose, head, body on row 15 it says to skip chains. but the second chain is not lining up and also is single crocheted so it is 'thicker' than the other chain. are these eyelids? or did I mess up someplace?

Also, do you have the directions for the acorn?

    1. Marie, I actually did send you a reply afew months ago through Gmail, but I'm not sure if you got it.

I think I fixed the problem, but if it still doesn't line up I may have to make another Scrat so I can perfect the pattern.

Those things are the little tuffs of fur that stick out from his cheeks. (look up at my reply to Caren to learn more about them) And yes, I have the pattern for his acorn on my blog as well.

Let me know if you are still having problems.

    1. Sorry about that. Yeah, I had just started crocheting when I made him. If there's anything I can fix just let me know.

Also, I believe you have his tufts confused with his ears. The ears are actually a separate pattern that you can sew on wherever you want. The things sticking out of the side of his head were originally going to be his tufts, but I didn't like them so I used them as filling for the other tufts I made. I thought I had clarified that in the pattern but I didn't see anything about it. I'll have to fix that.

  47. Hi, I love the pattern for Skrat. I made him the first time back in May 2013. I had my computer crash a while back and have been going around the web to find patterns I lost in the crash. I wanted to say that I had no trouble making him with your pattern before and do not look to have any problems this time. I have been doing crochet for many, many years though (heading for 70 yrs old) so that could be the reason. Thanks for a great pattern.

my name is Jessica and I'm an enthusiastic german crocheting woman. A few months ago, I started my own blog, on which I post normal posts, but also my own patterns for free. Since I already crochet scrat after a pattern of yours and really love it, I want to ask you, if I could translate your patterns and post them on my blog. Of course I will link your original pattern as well as the notice, that you are the creator of them.
I want to translate them, because there are just a few numbers of good german patterns on the internet and a lot of germans have their difficulties with english.

I would appreciate a positive feedback of yours.

  54. Hello.
Thank you for sharing your brilliant pattern.
I have just one query that i would appreciate your help with.
At the end of row 17 there should be 15 stitches to the pattern.
On row 18 if you add up the stitches and follow the pattern it only used 14 and I had to sc in 4 not 3 at the end to get the required 17 stitches.
Have I got something wrong ?
    Many thanks
    Julia.
